I chose to research the band We were Promised Jetpacks. Out of all the bands that were options, it was one of the only bands who's music I enjoyed listening to and felt it would be easier for me to get a feel for the band if I actually wanted to listen to their music. Despite their songs having a sense of urgency(this was highlighted in an interview with the band while they were in New York), there lyrics can be very melancholy. I think their album covers fit the mood of the band perfect, using muted colours and very simple designs.
I wanted to combine the simplicity of their designs and the mood of their lyrics, so I tried to focus on their lyrics and what stood out to me personally from them. I noticed that their were many references to death, time, weather and home in their songs. These themes took up a good portion of the songs themselves. I still wanted to keep the simple design in mind, so tried to think of a way to show these references without making the design too intricate. I decided to use very basic symbols ro represent the porton if the song taken up with the references. I used the "helvetica inserat cyrillic upright" font in the design, as I want to use a sans serif font that was bold, but neat. I used muted colours used in the bands album covers(For some reason, the entire poster is showing up in only greys right now, apologies!), as I think they suit the overall sound of the band perfectly.
I like this design; it certainly communicates the look and feel of the band as I can see from the examples of album art you have shown. The stylised symbols are great and all very clear. The only thing I could suggest is to make the spacing between the symbols equal as it tends to make it look quite slopping taking away from what could be a brilliant design.
ReplyDeleteYour poster looks good in terms of layout and colour theme. It matches their album covers. I like the symbols but the "weather" one could be different, it rather reminds me something energetic or powerful (energy drinks) not necessarily weather. It will work better if you add a cloud to it for example. It took me some time to understand the chart and what is about because of lack of chart title? Also "% of song" and "Title" could be differentiated more from the resto of text. The key helped me definitely to get the point. I see that typography choice was dictated by their logo. Im finding all-caps working fine with those icons. The font communicates short and solid message. You have there punctuation mark to be fixed and "key" part seems to be not flushed left to the same line but to the symbols. It makes the grid looking ragged. I hope that my critical opinion helps you to make it even better.
ReplyDeleteI agree the simplicity of your infographic is really well done and its got obvious influences in your design from the bands album artwork.
ReplyDeleteFrom the font choice (same font as the band logo displayed on album artwork?)to the muted colouring and vector style graphics its clear this design has a lot of influence from the band.
The only thing I might suggest to add would be something that explained that the chart you designed was refering to the bands lyrics, because this wasnt too clear at first.
Overall thought, I really like the design and think there is a clear reference to the bands style of music in the design choices as well as taking inspiration from the album artworks.
nice one :)
